ETHIOPIA
February 2025
Ethiopia, one of the most fascinating and culturally diverse countries in the world. It is home to authentic indigenous tribes and some of the world's most unique man-made wonders.
From the deep spirituality of Lalibela to hair-raising encounters with the tribes of the Omo Valley, Ethiopia is one of the most rewarding places for travel portrait photography. The people, the atmosphere, the ambience.
800 years ago, the Ethiopian king of Lalibela carved 11 full-size churches underground from a whole rock. Complete with inner naves and columns. And all with just a hammer and chisel. Still used for religious ceremonies, these underground places of worship are guarded by orthodox Catholic priests who silently emerge from the darkness to greet you as you enter.
On an epic tour of the Omo Valley, I met 5 tribes - including the Mursi lip-plate tribe and the Hamer, who inspired the costumes of the Mad Max film. The real, raw Africa - limited facilities with showers only every other day, lifelong experience with natives, waking up to the sounds of a village, stunning landscapes, awe-inspiring poverty.
